Gate Valve vs Butterfly Valve in Fire Systems: Which Is Better?

A fire protection contractor in Singapore called me last week. He was designing a sprinkler system for a new high-rise. He had to choose between gate valves and butterfly valves for the main riser. His client wanted the cheapest option. The local fire authority required UL-listed components. And the mechanical room was so tight that a standard gate valve would not fit.
He asked me: “Which one should I use?”

Gate valves use a flat or wedge-shaped gate that slides up and down perpendicular to the pipe bore. You turn a handwheel to raise or lower the gate through a threaded stem. A gate valve typically requires 7 to 25 full handwheel rotations to go from fully closed to fully open, depending on pipe size. When fully open, the gate retracts completely out of the flow path. You get an unobstructed bore with essentially zero pressure drop.

In fire protection, the most common type is the OS&Y (Outside Screw and Yoke) gate valve. The rising stem gives you a clear visual indication of whether the valve is open or closed. Firefighters and inspectors can see from a distance that the system is active and not accidentally shut off.
Butterfly valves use a circular disc mounted on a central stem inside the pipe bore. You rotate the disc 90° (a quarter-turn) to go from fully blocking the flow to lying parallel with the flow. A DN100 butterfly valve has a face-to-face length of about 55 mm, compared to 170–230 mm for a comparable gate valve. They are dramatically more compact.

The disc always stays inside the pipe bore. That gives butterfly valves their compact size and fast operation. In fire protection, butterfly valves designed to UL/FM standards incorporate an EPDM resilient seat that provides bubble-tight shutoff at rated pressure. Many also include a tamper switch that sends a supervisory signal to the fire alarm control panel when the valve moves from the fully open position.

Where Each Valve Fits Best – Practical Guidance
So which one should you choose? Here is the practical answer.
Gate valves are better for main pipelines and high-pressure applications. They provide full flow with minimal pressure drop, which matters when you need to move large volumes of water through the main supply line. OS&Y gate valves are recommended when positive shutoff and a quick visual indicator of open/closed position is required. They are the traditional choice for main control valves in fire sprinkler systems. NFPA 24, the standard for private fire service mains, suggests using OS&Y gate valves, butterfly valves, and underground gate valves with post indicators.
Butterfly valves are better for branch control and general system isolation. They are ideal for indoor applications where space and maintenance access are key. Butterfly valves are preferred in sectional control valves or compact systems for fast response. They are lightweight, cost-effective, and very fast to operate – key advantages in modern fire protection projects. They also install much faster than flanged gate valves – grooved-end butterfly valves can be installed more than three times faster than flange connections.
Many projects use both. Gate valves on the main riser and pump suction lines. Butterfly valves on branch lines, zone control points, and alarm valve assemblies. Using both correctly ensures a safer and more efficient fire protection system.
